U.S. Halts Afghan Immigration Processing After National Guard Shooting
This action followed statements from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who described the suspect as “an Afghan national who was one of the many unvetted, mass-paroled into the United States under Operation Allies Welcome on September 8, 2021, under the Biden administration.”
Earlier reports from multiple media outlets indicated that the individual, accused of severely wounding two guardsmen in a Wednesday ambush-style assault, is Rahmanullah Lakanwal. Lakanwal reportedly arrived in the U.S. in 2021 and was granted asylum earlier this year.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced on Wednesday evening that it has “stopped processing all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals indefinitely, pending further review of security and vetting protocols.”
Former President Donald Trump commented that the suspect “was flown in” under the administration of his successor, Joe Biden, whose Operation Allies Welcome (OAW) program managed the rapid evacuation of Afghans following the Taliban's 2021 takeover.
Trump added, “We must now re-examine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country.”
